Housing Accommodations Procedure

The College of Charleston's Office of Campus Housing works in cooperation with the Center for Disability Services and Student Health Services to assist students with on-campus housing needs.  The College will consider reasonable housing accommodations for students with disabilities.

Housing accommodations include, but are not limited to:

Wheelchair-accessible room and bathroom
Flashing fire alarms and bed shakers
Reduction of number of roommates

Please complete the following two forms and submit to the Center for Disability Services:

  1. Student-completed form:   Housing Accommodations Application and Release of Information (pdf)
  2. Physician-completed form: Documentation of Disability-Related Need for Housing Accommodations (pdf)

If you are requesting an emotional support animal (ESA) as an accommodation, your treatment provider should also complete
the ESA Information form (pdf).

  1. A housing application must be completed and must be on file with the C of C Office of Campus Housing.  The deadline for requesting modified housing accommodations will be the same as the deadline for the housing application.
  2. Each case will be individually evaluated with respect to the documentation presented and the accommodations requested.
  3. The intent to request housing accommodations that the student includes on the “Housing Accommodations” form DOES NOT take the place of the housing application required by C of C Office of Campus Housing.
  4. The student will be sent a letter notifying him/her whether or not the application was approved.

NOTE:  Students with housing needs will be accommodated only if they submit their housing contract within the time limits established by C of C Office of Campus Housing, or if the waiting list for housing reaches their name.

If a private room or private bath or similar accommodation is a necessary method of meeting the housing needs of a student with a disability, C of C will consider exceptions to its general room rate structure unless doing so would result in a fundamental alteration to the housing program.  Each case will be evaluated individually, and necessary modifications will be provided in accordance with the law.

The Center for Disability Services will carefully consider each request when reviewing documentation and recommendations.

Once the complete Housing Accommodation Request packet is received, a SNAP administrator evaluates the completeness of the application and supporting documentation and makes a recommendation of approval or denial. An email of approval or denial will be sent to your College of Charleston email account approximately one week to ten business days from receipt of your HousingAccommodation Request packet.

Housing Accommodation requests must be submitted annually.
